We have been working on developing our own criteria for what makes great literature. The packet "Good and Great Fiction" was one step in this process. Today students wrote an in-class exploratory essay on whether or not their first thesis novel is good or great. I assigned the next step in reading the novel--re-read and take notes using your personal criteria for great literature and write a dialogue journal as you go. This 2nd reading and dialogue journal are due Thursday, Oct. 28.

We have been working our way through the first set of literary/rhetorical terms sheets and it is likely that we will have a test over the second half of those terms on Tuesday, Oct 12.
On Tuesday I announced the due date for the first reading of the thesis novel #1. Students should simply read (no note-taking) their first novel and have this reading completed by Friday, Oct. 15. They will then re-read the novel with specific directions for taking notes towards the essay that they will write about it. It is my expectation that students take me seriously when I say that they will read each novel twice. It is unrealistic to think that you can "get" a piece of literature on just one reading (even 2 readings isn't enough, but I am realistic about what students can accomplish...)

We have been working on the "green sheet" terms this past week and our first green sheet test was yesterday. We will re-take the test on Thursday, as we did not meet the 90/90 mark (we keep retesting until 90% of the class scores a 90% or above on the test.) Also, due tomorrow is the write up on Plato, Frederick Douglass and Malcolm X. Finally, students should be finalizing their choice for the Thesis author and purchasing the first book on the list.

Welcome back to school! This is the first post on this blog this year. I typically update this blog 2 or 3 times a week. You can look here for brief summaries of what we did in class, assignments, and due dates.
A major project that students have been doing on-going work on is the Thesis project where they study a major American author throughout the year. Right now, students are in the exploratory phase, doing some reading of some authors and then determining who they want to study all year. Their first major assignment, "Author Selection," is due Monday Sept. 27.
I assigned a short reading by Frederick Douglass today (see me for the reading hand-out) and the assignment for reading it is here: Frederick Douglass. This is due on Thursday Sept. 23.
